Mary A Russell was born in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, to Irish parents. She grew up in Fuoss Mills, Pennsylvania, a small flour milling village. Her parents built their home on the banks of the Juniata River, and was only accessible by passing through a cover bridge built in 1874 to span the wide body of water. She enjoyed walking to the school bus stop everyday in the warm months but didn’t look forward to the very cold hike in the winter and waiting for the bus to pick her up.
Mary Russell spent five years researching and writing her novel. “Secret Keepers and Skinny Shadows,” a murder mystery based on an actual murder that took place in Altoona, Pennsylvania in March 1962. Of course all the names and places were changed and written as fiction. Her unique research methods allowed her to uncover information that might have ordinarily escaped scrutiny.
She is a member of the Crested Butte Writers, of Crested Butte, Colorado, Russell has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Akron in Ohio, and makes her home in Ohio.
